Expectations
for Parents
Interaction
*Ask your child about their day online: what did they learn? What projects, activities, or collaborations did they do?
*Review difficult concepts with your child to help reinforce the importance of what they're learning in class.
*Review grades and scores weekly, and ask the teacher if you need clarification.
*Return documents and forms as needed to the teacher in a timely manner.
Engagement
*K-2: engage with your child during learning times, but do not answer questions for your child.
*3-5: Allow your child to struggle through the material. Your child needs to learn perseverance and grit, but be a constant positive supporter and encourager.
*6-12: Allow your child the freedom to learn without you hovering over them, but provide constant support and encouragement.
*For ANY grade, always feel free to ask your child what they're learning, and go to the teacher with questions if you don't understand.
Communication
*K-5: Communicate with your child's teacher regularly. Send an email, a message, a text, or whatever tool your child's teacher uses to keep close track of your child's progress.
*6-8: Ask your child's teacher for regular updates on progress and needs. Request clarification if needed. Remember: you only have one child in that class, but the teacher has many students and may not remember to message you.
*9-12: Ask the teacher for test scores, progress, and graduation requirements. Advocate for your child when needed.
Questions
No matter what grade range your child is in, you should always have access to every teacher that works with your child. You also have the right to find out assignment scores, test scores, whether your child has met promotion requirements, behavior plans established, and any other documentation that has been done on or for your child. If you're not sure, always ask.
At the beginning of the year, make sure you have the ability to communicate with the teacher in whatever way that teacher is available, whether through messaging, email, an app, or texting.
